Coffe

You can buy our coffees in our shop in Canterbury, loose beans or ground to order. You will also be able to buy them online shortly

When we announced that coffee would be one of our key offerings, many people said we were mad, especially in Canterbury with the current saturation of coffee shops and, dare I say, homogenisation of the high street as a result. However, we believed that if we could offer truly great coffee, then we would create a niche!
That is why we worked hard to create our own special espresso blend with our coffee roaster. He buys most of his coffee via Mercanta, The Coffee Hunters. We also offer single origin coffees and grind them to order in whatever quantity you want . The reason for this approach is that given coffee goes off very quickly, then buying little and often is the way to go rather than having half empty bags of coffee going stale in the cupboard.
As well as our espresso blend, we also believe that coffee is not all about the 'caffeine hit'. Its about flavour too, so we are great advocates of filter coffee because single varieties are best expressed when served this way. Therefore, we offer a 'filter of the week' every week so you have the opportunity to experience the the varied flavours of great coffees from around the world. Some of the coffees that we have already featured as our 'filter of the week' and others that will in the future include:

Australian Skybury

This is a smooth, full bodied, mild coffee which will suit all tastes. Grown in Queensland, not far from the Great Barrier Reef, the estate was started in 1978 set in the middle of tropical forests, the biggest problem being the kangaroos eating the young trees. This coffee is surprisingly smooth with a velvet character and soft body. The qualities that are found in this coffee are highly-prized in coffee terms and are found in rare coffees such as Hawaiian Kona and Jamaica Blue Mountain.

Kenya AA Blue Mountain

In the heart of the prime coffee growing regions of Kenya, farmers whose shambas thrive in the shadow of the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kenya produce a coffee that boasts a fine acidity, a full smooth body and that incredible blackcurrant flavour that is the hallmark of a top quality Kenya AA

Dominican Republic Ebano Verde

Grown in an eco-zone in the Dominican Republic at 1,100 meters above sea level. The beans are double selected and sun dried on patios. This is one of the finest Central American coffees but is little known in the UK

Brazil Cachoeira Da Grama

100% yellow bourbon pulped coffee produced by one of the founding members of the Brazil Speciality Coffee Association. This is considered the cream of Brazilian coffee. The yelow bourbon variety produces coffee that is exceptionally smooth, low in acidity and naturally sweet with hints of chocolate, toffee and caramel - suitable for all-day drinking.

Guatemala Finca San Fransisco

Expect smooth milk chocolate body with amazing fruit complexity. This can be put down to the mix of Catuai, Caturra and Bourbon that make it perfect for the espresso machine.

Guatemal Finca El Bosque Amatitlan

Ethiopian Sidamo

The birthplace of coffee. This region produces coffee with a real mellowness and is gentle on the constitution and stomach. It is selected very carefully as it can be "variable" due to the harsh, wild conditions in which it is grown and difficulty in harvesting.

Rwanda Mugombwa

This coffee is 100% bourbon. This ancient variety was first presented to Louis XVI by the mayor of Amsterdam. It was virtually destroyed in the 1970's as higher yielding varieties were planted in its place, but increasingly quality lovers are recognising that this variety provides a sweeter, fuller and brighter cup.

El Salvador Everest 100% Borbollon

This bourbon variety originated in the Reunion Islands. Low acidity with a natural balanced body and sweetness, characterised by a chocolaty aftertaste.

Kenya Peaberry

Grown around the Mt. Kenya, our specially selected Peaberry bean contains all that is best in the Kenya flavour. It has good acidity without being overwhelming and a subtle light berry fruit flavour. This coffee is produced by the fusion of the cherry ovule meaning that inside the cherry there is only one bean instead of two. This results in a different absorbtion of sweetness into the bean which also roasts in a different way to the two-bean variety's. It has a very special, bright flavour, and a fine delicate quality. Best drunk as a lighter roast.

Costa Rica Peaberry

Old Brown Java

Also known as Old Government Java, this coffee was traditionally used as ballast on sailing ships plying the spice trade around the islands of Indonesia. The moist, salty, warm air beneath the waterline in the ships hull prematurely aged this coffee giving it it's tawny, heavy bodied character. These days the conditions are recreated and the coffee is left to age in order to bring out the traditional characteristics. It has mild/low acidity, a syrupy heavy body and a balanced sweetness.

French Breakfast Blend

Just because some coffee lovers like their coffee very dark roasted. It does not follow that they do not care about the quality of the beans that are used in that roast. We use only the highest grade Costa Rica, Colombian and Brazilian arabica beans, roasted in the dark continental style. This coffee has an almost black, shiny appearance. if you like seriously strong coffee, you will love this roast.

Watch out for these wonderful coffees that you can buy as a filter, loose beans or ground to order.
